Courtney Carver shows us the power of simplicity to improve our health, build more meaningful relationships, and relieve stress in our professional and personal lives.

We are often on a quest for more—we give in to pressure every day to work more, own more, and do more. For Carver, this constant striving had to come to a stop when she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Stress was like gasoline on the fire of symptoms, and it became clear that she needed to root out the physical and psychological clutter that were the source of her debt and discontent.
In this book, she shows us how to pursue practical minimalism so we can create more with less—more space, more time, and even more love. Carver invites us to look at the big picture, discover what's most important to us, and reclaim lightness and ease by getting rid of all the excess things.

An expert on minimalism and simplicity, Courtney Carver shows us how to create more with less

Editorial Reviews

Review

"There's an age-old fallacy that more stuff equals more happiness. Research and Carver's beautiful new book lead us to the truth: happiness, joy, and love can very much derive from a whole lot less.”

Shawn Achor, happiness researcher, New York Times bestselling author of The Happiness Advantage

"Soulful Simplicity encourages conscious minimalism from the inside out. It's a heartfelt yet practical guide for making life simple again. Courtney's story is relatable in so many ways — she lets you walk in her shoes so you can see the mental and physical steps she took to escape a stressful life that literally almost killed her. This book has made me laugh, smile, and take action towards living a life uncluttered by most of the needless things people fill their lives with, leaving me with space for what truly matters. A life that isn’t constant busyness, rushing, and stress, but instead contemplation, creation, and connection with people and projects I love."

—Angel Chernoff, Author and Coach, Marc and Angel Hack Life

"Courtney Carver reminds us that simplicity isn't just about being organized, it's about getting back to love. With simple genius, Marie Kondo taught us how to declutter our homes, now it's time to let Courtney Carver take us to a deeper place. To refine our lives, and reconnect with what matters most."

—Jonathan Fields, author of How to Live a Good Life and Uncertainty: Turning Fear and Doubt into Fuel for Brilliance

"Courtney Carver’s new book Soulful Simplicity is a practical roadmap for embracing the beauty of less and making room in our lives for what matters most."

Ali Edwards, Craft the story.™

"In a world where so much of the messaging around radical simplicity is just about living with less stuff, Soulful Simplicity prescribes a lifestyle filled with a lot more of one thing: love. What our heart needs is a huge part of the equation, and Courtney teaches us how to make sure we're listening to it."

Cait Flanders, author of The Year of Less

"A gentle, compassionate guide to making more space in your home, more time in your day, and more love in your heart. Courtney’s personal story provides powerful inspiration to live a simpler, more intentional life."

—Francine Jay, missminimalist.com

“Courtney Carver understands that simplifying involves more than decluttering—it’s about habits, appreciation, discipline, and love.”

Joshua Fields Millburn, theminimalists.com

"Courtney Carver’s book is vulnerable and helpful. Courtney shows us that living simply goes beyond decluttering your closets and junk drawers. She gently illustrates that simplicity is the way back to connection, peace, good health, and love."

Tammy Strobel, RowdyKittens.com

"Soulful Simplicity is the kind of book you keep on your kitchen table so you can dip in when you have five minutes to yourself. I love how Courtney inspires the reader with her own story and then holds your hand through the process of making real change — the kind of changes you want to make. There are so many gems in this book!"

—Susannah Conway, author of
This I Know: Notes on Unraveling the Heart

"With humility, honesty and authenticity, Courtney Carver invites each of us to find greater simplicity in life–and provides a practical roadmap for us to find it in our own unique way."

—Joshua Becker, Founder of Becoming Minimalist and Author of The More of Less.

“If organizing your stuff worked, you'd be organized by now. Get this book for its strategic "how"s, and even more powerful "why"s.

Courtney Carver writes things. She wrote a book called Soulful Simplicity and the simplicity blog, bemorewithless.com. She shares things that make her laugh and cry on Instagram (@bemorewithless). She doesn't know her Myers Briggs Type but she knows she's an introvert because she needs to be free from humans several times a day (cats and dogs are always welcome).

Carver doesn't have an impressive degree, awards, or a big, fancy home full of stuff. Instead, she selectively surrounds herself with her favorite things and people she loves. She does work she truly cares about, goes on adventures (in the world or in her own backyard) and likes chai lattes with almond milk while reading or writing.

Her newest book, Project 333 is about the minimalist fashion challenge she created in 2010 and how you can simplify your life by simplifying your closet. It will be available on 3-3-20 published by Penguin Random House.

Soulful Simplicity will help you transform your life. No single book has ever impacted my life the way Soulful Simplicity has. Courtney Carver goes well beyond the basics of minimalism in creating a simple life.

She delves into the much harder aspects such as how we really want to spend our time, boundaries, how to know what we need, how to listen to your body, and how to heal.

Soulful Simplicity taught me how to know what my body and mind are trying to tell me, how to establish boundaries with both myself & the world around me, and helped me to rethink how I wanted to live my life. I've made lasting positive changes in my life thanks to her book.

Courtney Carver explains her story and how she changed her life and how we can change ours. Her story is filled with heart and compassion for her readers as she has been there and gone through simplifying her life and making meaningful changes. She uses simplifying her life in terms of how changing our relationship to stuff as a springboard for dealing with the much harder issues.

The book gives inspiration for determining what the concept of enough means to you both in terms of physical possessions as well as how we view ourselves in terms of being at peace that we are enough and don't need to try to keep doing more and buying more.

Soulful Simplicity is my most recommended book and the one I have gifted to help others. If you read one personal development book in your life let this be it!

Courtney writes from a place of deep authenticity that is a breath of fresh air in a sea of other books of similar genre that I find to be curated prescriptive perspectives drenched in buzz words. Courtney is offering something different here. She’s delivered a memoir that is vulnerable and giving. It’s categorized as self-help/personal growth because she tells freely about her healing journey and work towards her own best life. She doesn’t preach or espouse any expertise. She comes from a place of such transparent imperfection as to challenge some of the deepest orthodoxies or unspoken rules of the pop minimalism movement. She invites us to be curious about how we can live better and be better. I sat down on the morning of a day off and intended to read for an hour before turning to other “to-dos”. I turned my alarm off after 45 minutes and read Soulful Simplicity cover to cover. I felt full of inspiration and moved deeply from connection she created in this lovely book-like a morning spent with a good friend. There are certainly some parts of Courtney’s experience that don’t align perfectly with my vision for my best life, such as spirituality. Though her engaging honesty creates space for me to wonder how to best shape those parts of my own life. I’ve already seen changes in my life from inspiration from my time with her book (lingering, enhanced morning practice, habit stacking, canceling unnecessary “commitments”, prioritizing resting, validation for exploring curiosity, and listening to my heart). Because nothing is perfect my one guttural critique is her use of the word “crazy” in a suggestion to ask ourselves “wouldn’t it be crazy if...” so to imagine audacious changes for ourselves. I love the suggestion of this exercise, and I’m putting it to practice. I understand what she means though I wish she’d of chosen different language, such as “wouldn’t it be extraordinary” or “marvelous” or “wild”. Mental illness and “craziness” are stigmatized and language matters. I’ve asked my local independent bookstore to carry Souful Simplicity, and ordered two copies for gifts. If there’s any part of you calling you towards this book, then there’s something in here for you.

I'm so glad that I preordered "Soulful Simplicity" because it came to my home between Christmas and New Year's Day, which is precisely the time to read Courtney Carver's story and to reflect on the questions and suggestion contained within. I have read many blogs, books, and articles on simplicity, and this book is one of the best. Carver's authentic voice and willingness to be vulnerable to her readers allows wonderful points of true connection. She doesn't come across as someone with "all the answers;" however, she does clearly speak from a place of hard-earned wisdom. What I most appreciate is her slow and heart-engaged approach to life change. Many writers on this topic approach change like New Year's dieters.- whole hog and all at once, despite what research tells us about the ineffectiveness of this approach. Carver advocates a slow and steady approach that includes check-ins with her readers' intuition at each step. If you are looking for some brand new, "never before seen" idea, you might not find it here, but if you're looking for a kind, warm, and engaging coach to inspire your own authentic journey, Carver's book will be a wonderful step in the right direction.

This was a very interesting, thought-provoking, and challenging book. The author uses her own experience (a diagnosis of MS and the changes that required of her life) to explain the benefits of adopting a simpler life, less beholden to belongings and societal expectations of "success" and a "good life." She explains the way she simplified her life -- eliminating debt, downsizing her home, getting rid of many of her belongings, changing her approach to what was important -- and how this allowed her to experience life more deeply and more fully and to be a better mother, wife, and friend. What I particularly liked about the book was that the author was open about her struggles, acknowledging that some of the changes were particularly difficult and that it took her years to figure things out (and that this process was still ongoing). She explains the actions she took and makes suggestions for how readers can go about making certain changes in their lives, but she does not claim that her methods are the only way or the "right" way for everyone. I hope to implement many of her suggestions in my own life.
